As seen, there are many different sources for this narration in Sunni books, with at least 12 chains and multiple sub chains. This in itself provides corroboration for the report. It must also be noted that since this is fadhail (virtue) the chain matters less. Al Shawkani mentioned the hadith and said: “With this, it becomes evident that the hadith is al hassan li ghayrihi (fair on account of other corroborating narrations).

ما : الحفار ، عن عيسى بن موسى الهاشمي ، عن أبي بكر بن المرزبان ، عن محمد بن موسى القرشي ، عن إبراهيم بن سعيد الجعفي ، عن عبدالله البجلي ، عن شعبة ، عن قتادة ، عن حميد بن عبدالرحمان ، عن أبي سعيد الخدري ، عن عمران بن حصين قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله : النظر إلى وجه علي بن أبي طالب عبادة
The rationale behind this hadith is not that looking at Imam Ali is worship in and of itself but rather that one who looks to Imam Ali is compelled to worship the Lord of Imam Ali based on how immaculate and virtuous he is! This leads to the person worshipping almighty God (ibada).
