Al-ʻUzzā was as one of the three chief godess of the Arab pagans from pre-Islamic times and was worshiped by the pre Islamic Arabs. This is mentioned in the holy Quran surah 53:19 as being one of the goddesses that people worshiped. Now surely it cannot be that the prophet named his children after those false gods that he was sent to eradicate! See below for some traditions about the naming of his sons.
Ibn Asakir narrates from Musayyab: The Prophet (s) had two sons Tahir and Tayyib and Prophet named one of them Abdul Shams and the other one Abdul Uzza.
Ibn Asakir narrates from Urwah: The Prophet (s) had Abdul Uzza, Abdul Munaaf and Qasim from Khadija and he didn't have any son named Tayyib and Tahir as People of Iraq claimed as our teachers have quoted three sons that were mentioned above.
The same has been quoted by Ibn Nuaim Al Asfahani
Ibn Asakir narrates from Musayyab: The Prophet (s) had two sons Tahir and Tayyib and Prophet named one of them Abdul Shams and the other one Abdul Uzza.

Since we cannot accept that the prophet named his son out of homage to a pagan god one must also accept that Imam Ali would not name his sons out of homage to his enemies namely Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman!
