Ghadir Khumm: The revelation of Verse (5:67)

O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allah does not guide the disbelieving people. (5:67)
The aforementioned verse is extremely pertinent to the discussion of Ghadir Khumm. Shias hold that this verse was revealed on the day of Ghadir to contextualize the announcement of Ghadir. This verse, if proven to have been revealed in regards to Ali (as) proves:

  1. That his appointment is something divine as declared by Allah (swt)
  2. The declaration is so vital to Islam that the message of Islam would mean nothing without it.
Some opponents have tried to argue many times that this verse has nothing to do with Ali or Ghadeer Khumm whatsoever, rather they try to argue the Quranic context mentions it has to do with the interaction with Jews and Christians.

However, we see in numerous reports that this verse has been mentioned alongside Ali (as) on Ghadeer.

Al-Shawkani:

Ibn Hatem and Ibn Mardwiyah and Ibn Asakir has related from Ibn Saaed al Khidar that he said:

This verse was revealed "O Messenger! Deliver what has been revealed to you from your Lord" to the Prophet (صلی الله علیه واله وسلم) on the day of Ghadir-e-Khum for Ali ibn Abi Taleb (عليه السلام). Ibn Mardawiyah related from Ibn Maasod that he said: We read on the time of the Messenger of Allah (صلی الله عليه واله وسلم ): "O Messenger! Deliver what has been revealed to you from your Lord THAT ALI IS the chief of the believers and if you do it not, then you have not delivered His message, and Allah will protect you from the people".

Abu Saeed Al-Khurdi Said:

This verse “O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to You from Your Lord” was revealed on the day of Ghadeer al-Khum in favour of Ali ibn Abi Talib.

Ibn Masood Said:

We used to recite in the times of the Prophet like this, “O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to You from Your Lord”, ‘That Ali is the Mawla (leader/chief) of the believers’, “If You do not do it then You have not Conveyed His message and Allah will protect You from the people” } (5:67).

From al-Imam Abu Hassan al-Wahidi, in the book named "Bi isbab al-Nuzol" narrated from Abi Sa'eed al-Khdri (RA) he said:

Under the verse 5:67, It says:

Tenth: This verse was revealed in the merit of Ali ibn Abi Talib. When this verse was revealed, Prophet Mohammad (saww) took the hand of Ali and said, ‘Whoever I Am His Master, Ali Is His Master. O Allah! Love those who love him. Be hostile to those who are hostile to him.

[Tafseer Al Kabeer, Volume 12, Page 49]

Al-Razi:

The verse was revealed about Ali ibn Abi Talib (A), and when this verse came down he [The Prophet (PBUH)] took his hand and said: "To whomever I am his master, Ali (A) is his master, O’Allah (SWT) be pleased with whoever follows him and be the enemy of whoever shows enmity towards him". So Umar (RA) came to him and said: "Congratulations o son of Abi Talib! You have become my master and the master of all believing men and women." And this is the saying of ibn Abbas and al-Baraa' bin ‘azb and Muhammad bin Ali.

Abu Naeem Isfahani on the authority of the Sahabi Abu Burdah:

"'There is no doubt that Allah (swt) has made a promise to me with regards to 'Ali. I asked my Lord 'What is it?' Allah (swt) said 'Listen', to which I replied: 'I am listening'. Verily Allah (swt) said 'Ali is the Flag of Guidance, Imam of the Saints, and the Light of Truth for those that follow me, and is that Kalima that has been made compulsory upon believers. Whoever loves him, loves me, whoever angers 'Ali, angers Me, O Muhammad convey this good news to 'Ali…"
