True Irfan: The Friends of Allah and the Enemies of Allah

It is narrated from Abi Hamza Al-Thumali (r.a) who said: Imam Al Baqir (a.s) said:

"O Aba Hamza! verily only he who knows Allah (swt) has worshipped Him, and he who doesn't know Allah it is as if he has worshipped someone other than Him, lost in his way." I asked: may Allah grant you success, what is the recognition (Ma'rifat) of Allah? he (a.s) said: "It is to acknowledge Allah and to acknowledge Muhammad the Messenger of Allah (saw) and the acknowledgement of Wilayah and Imamat of Imam Ali (a.s) and the rightly guided Imams (a.s) after him and to disassociate from their enemies towards Allah(swt), This is IRFAN of Allah (swt)."

I asked: may Allah grant you success, if I do this have I completed the true Imaan? he (a.s) said: "Be friend of the friends of Allah (swt) and be enemy of the enemies of Allah, and 'be with the Truthful Ones' [9:119] as Allah has ordered you" I asked: who are the friends of Allah and who are the enemies of Allah? he (a.s) said: "the friends of Allah are Muhammad the Messenger of Allah (saw), Ali (a.s), Al-Hasan (a.s), Al-Husain (a.s), Ali Ibn Al-Husain (a.s), then me, then my son Ja'far (a.s)" and then he pointed to Ja'far who was sitting nearby, "so whoever takes these his guardians it is as if he has taken Allah as his guardian and has been with the Truthful Ones as Allah has ordered him" I asked: *Who are the enemies of Allah, may Allah grant you success? he said: "the four idols" I asked: who are they? he (a.s) said: "they are Abu Fusail (Abu Bakr), Ramh (Umar), Na'thal (Uthman) and Mu'awiya, and whoever has their religion*, and whoever is hostile towards these he has been hostile towards Allah's enemies."

  1. The narration doesn’t Contain any chain, therefor, the narration is weak

    1. Huh? The chain is from Abu Hamza Al Thumali who was a trustworthy companion of Imam Al Baqir (as) - as well as other imams...

    2. That's the whole point, the narration doesn’t contain any chain, the author who wrote this died 320 hijri, which means there is between him and abu thumali, about 300 years, he atleast needs a connected chain with 5 maybe 4 narrtors, so it can be connected. Abu Thumali is the only narrtor there is no chain

    3. I know what you mean now.

I read in the introduction of my translated copy:

"Al-Ayyashi's Tafsir exists in a number of extant manuscripts, but none of these preserve the work that was originally composed by the author himself. Firstly, the chains of transmission connecting Al-Ayyashi to the Imams in the extant copies are truncated forms of the authors original manuscript, and hence what was originally a work comprising is now, due to a copyist redaction, a considerably shortened work.

In addition other scholars seemed to have upheld its authority as a whole:

"Allameh Tabatabai in the introduction that he had written on this interpretation, introduced it as one of the best works on its own subject and most authoritative interpretive heritage of predecessors, and He believes that scholars during the past 11 century have accepted the interpretation without denouncing it. Elsewhere he said: "I swear on my life that it is the best old definition of interpretation and the most authentic legacy of our former masters in the field of interpretation (Tabarsi)." -

So there were originally chains, the book is considered trustworthy (along with its author), and this truncation for brevity was not uncommon like in books like Nahjul Balagha, and Sahifa Sajjadiya.

Not to mention much of the Hadith are corroborated in other authentic books so I don't think it makes sense to just dismiss it.
