In al-Ṣirāṭ al-Mustaqīm, vol. 3, pp. 30.
[Ibn] al-Kalbī said:
“ʿUthmān used to be from those who are played with, and he used to act effeminately, and hit the daf.”
“Those who are played with” is a euphemism for sexual exploitation, which still goes on in some Sunni neighborhoods. It is also well known that the daf is associated with women or mukhannath, who are effeminate men.
“The daf or the duf is a percussion instrument which women use, and the plural is dufūf.”
