“Then Ali (karam allahu wajhah) was brought to Abu Bakr while he was saying:
‘I am the Slave of Allah and brother of His Messenger.’
It was said to him, ‘Pledge bay’ah to Abu Bakr’
He [Ali] said, ‘I am more worthy of ruling than you. I don’t give my bay’ah to you while you are obliged to give bay’ah to me’
